Built before the WWII Tempelhof Airport was one of main airports in Berlin till 2008. Soon after it was closed, Senate was going to constact this huge 386-hectare territory with new buildings into a new fancy living area. But the city residents protested against this plan and succeeded to get a new public park almost in the centre of Berlin.
Today this area is used in different ways: festivals and events, community urban gardens and refugee camp. People come here to do some sport (more than 10km of roads for bicycling, roller skating or longboarding!), make picnics and barbeque parties, fly the kites or just lay on the grass and chill with friends.
